Keeping Your Computer and You Safe

Keeping your computer safe from viruses, spyware and such takes diligence and can seem like a daunting task. Here is some information that can help you provide security for your computer as well as some tips and links to keep your personal information safe when you are online.

Definitions

Firewall - Software or hardware that prevents "hackers" from accessing your computer while online. A software firewall is the most popular for home PC users. ** Be sure to purchase or use a 2-directional firewall it prevents access to your computer from sending information without your knowledge.

Virus – Malicious computer code that affects the performance of your computer. Computers can be infected through email and websites.

Anti-Virus Protection – Protects your PC from viruses, many viruses are annoying, some can be very destructive.

Spyware – Adware or malware which is installed on your computer without your knowledge. It is invasive and is used to track your Internet browsing habits many spyware "bots" are not well written computer codes and really make your computer behave badly.

Phishing – A scam in which Internet fraudsters send spam or pop-up messages to lure personal and financial information from unsuspecting victims.

 

A few things you can do to keep your computer safe:

  • Back up your data regularly
  • Be sure to use a surge protector
  • Be sure to download Windows Updates
    • Schedule downloads and installations
    • Check to see if your machine has all current critical updates
  • Install an Internet Security Package and KEEP IT UPDATED
    • This should include a firewall, antivirus protection
    • Can also include spyware and spam protection
  • Install and use a good anti spyware package
    • Be sure to scan your computer for viruses and spyware weekly

 

A few things you can do to keep your personal information safe:

  • Use a Secure Site when purchasing online
  • Do not need to give out your Social Security Number, User ID, or Password - Reliable sites will not ask for them
  • If you are not sure, do not buy! Check it out, call, etc. seek some advice
