Edwin L. Busse Grocery Store   

Photograph showing the interior of one of the first fully-stocked grocery stores in Mount Prospect, c 1930. Owned by Edwin L. Busse (center), it was located east of Emerson Street on Northwest Highway. The woman on the right is Loretta Rateike. The woman on the left is a cardboard figure.

First Mount Prospect Businesses   

Photograph showing earliest business buildings in Mount Prospect in area of Northwest Highway and Main Street. Included are a feed seed and farm machinery warehouse; blacksmith shop; post office; and general store. The photograph was taken sometime after 1885 when the first post office was established. The residents shown are unidentified.

John Meyn Blacksmith Shop, c. 1905 - Exterior   

Photograph of (left to right) William, Herman, and John Meyn in front of the Meyn Blacksmith Shop, ca. 1905. John opened the shop in the 1880s. It was located at what is now the northwest corner of Main Street and Northwest Highway. On the far left by the horse, another son, John, Jr., is just about visible.

Postcard showing the Mount Prospect Creamery Company building and the surrounding land as it looked in 1921. The company, located on the corner of Northwest Highway and Elm Street, was founded by Edward Busse in 1910.

Onion Shed, 1930  

Photograph showing a 1916 onion drying shed as it looked in 1930. This structure was located on Pine Street near Central Road. From the 1870s through the turn of the century, onions were one of Mount Prospect's primary crops. Many similar sheds then occupied the triangle of land bounded by Northwest Highway, Central Road, and Elmhurst Road.

Wille's Tavern, c. 1910

Postcard showing William Wille's Tavern and the barbershop on Busse Avenue, c. 1910. The residents shown are not identified. The building with the tavern was also known as Wille Hall. Here the members of the Mount Prospect Improvement Association and students of the Township High School gathered. Area residents also came here for dances and Saturday morning movies. This structure most recently housed the Dugout Military Inc. store.

Police Vehicles, 1937

George Wittenberg stands with the department's squad car and motocycle in 1937.Both vehicles were purchased in the early 1930s.Wittenberg served as police chief until his retirement in 1965.
