Newbery Award Winners

The Newbery Medal, first awarded in 1922, is the best known and most discussed children's book award in the country.

Proposed by Fredric G. Melcher and named after the eighteenth century English bookseller John Newbery, the medal is awarded to "the author of the 'most distinguished contributions to American literature for children'." The Newbery Medal continues to be awarded annually by the Association for Library Services to Children and the American Library Association.
