Coffee, Books, and More... Book Discussion

Led by Jud Strickland and Doug Lattner, the goal of this group is to read a variety of books, both fiction and non-fiction, that will stimulate the mind and some lively conversation. This book discussion meets on the third Wedesday of the month at 10 a.m. in Meeting Room B at the Library. Books will be available at the Fiction/AV/Teen desk one month prior to the discussion.

January 16: John Adams by David G. McCullough

A chronicle of the life of America's second president, including his youth, his career as a Massachusetts farmer and lawyer, his marriage to Abigail, his rivalry with Thomas Jefferson, and his influence on the birth of the United States.

February 20: Snow in August by Pete Hamill

An unlikely friendship between an eleven-year old Irish-Catholic boy and a lonely rabbi from Prague in 1947 Brooklyn has the two opening new windows of understanding with each other but still fighting the prejudices of the day.

March 19: Watership Down by Richard Adams

An allegorical tale of survival about a band of wild rabbits who leave their ancestral home to build a more humane society chronicles their adventures as they search for a safe place to establish a new warren where they can live in peace.

April 16: The Music Lesson by Katherine Weber

Grieving over the loss of her daughter, Irish-American art historican Patricia Dolan struggles to cope with a passionate love affair with her dangerous and charming Irish cousin Michael O'Driscoll, a stolen Vermeer painting, and a violent splinter group of the IRA.

May 21: Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen

Ninety-something-year-old Jacob Jankowski remembers his time in the circus as a young man during the Great Depression, his friendship with Marlena, the star of the equestrian act, and Rosie, the elephant, who gave them hope.
